Offered here is an all-original 1942 Gibson L-00, built during the short transitional period just before Gibson introduced the famous banner headstock. Pre-banner examples from 1942 are notably rare and represent one of the more desirable periods of L-00 production.

The guitar has been professionally examined and appraised by Hunter Matney of Matney Guitars in Denver, Colorado, providing additional documentation of its originality, condition, and significance as a wartime Gibson instrument.

This guitar wears its original factory black finish. It is not a black refinish over an original sunburst, which is something you occasionally see on vintage Gibsons. This is an outstanding example of a genuine factory-black pre-banner L-00 from 1942 that has survived 84 years with its original finish and components intact.

The guitar retains all of its original components inside and out, and has had a professional neck reset and fret dressing. It also has a few professionally repaired cracks that are stable and well executed. The guitar is structurally sound, plays comfortably up and down the neck, and is ready for many more years of use.

As you would expect from a guitar of this age, it shows honest player wear throughout. The finish has natural checking, light edge wear, and the small dings and marks that tell the story of a well-loved instrument. Nothing looks forced or artificial. It has simply aged the way a great vintage Gibson should.

The sound is everything people look for in an early wartime L-00. Dry, open, and incredibly responsive, with a woody midrange, clear trebles, and a surprising amount of volume from a small-bodied guitar. Whether you're a fingerstyle player, flatpicker, collector, or recording musician, this is the kind of instrument that immediately reminds you why these guitars have earned such a devoted following.

Original pre-banner L-00s do not come along often, especially examples that retain their original factory black finish and original components while already having the important maintenance completed. This is an honest, exceptionally original guitar that is ready to be played, collected, and appreciated for many years to come.
